The end of the school year always brings a mix of emotions — excitement, exhaustion, and sometimes a few bittersweet goodbyes. This year, our school hospitality committee – of which I am a member – decided to send off our departing staff with all the sweetness they deserve (literally). And so, our “sweet send-off” was born — a school-wide farewell party for every staff member moving on to their next chapter.
Whether they were retiring, transferring to a new school across town, or moving out of state, we wanted to honor all of them together with joy, gratitude, and dessert. Lots and lots of dessert.

The Sweet Send-Off Party Theme: Sweet in Every Way
We went full-on sweets theme for this one — think candy, ice cream, and colorful party vibes. Picture this: tables covered in sprinkle-inspired décor, a rainbow of treats, and a vibe that felt more “sugar rush” than somber goodbye.

A huge shoutout to my sweet friend and fellow hospitality committee member (she’s also our amazing Spanish teacher!) who made 90% of the decorations by hand. From candy garlands to festive centerpieces of melted ice cream cones and candy bowls, she knocked it out of the park!

And our brilliant art teacher even created a fun “Sweet Send-Off” sign in a banana split theme to pull everything together.

The Set-Up & Potluck Style of our Sweet Send-Off Party
We held the celebration on the next-to-last day of school, which worked out perfectly. As is the case all around the country, many secondary students seem to have a way of starting their summer break early – meaning, the numbers are often down on the last couple days of school.

Our administrators arranged for the attending students to have an extra-long lunch (with various staff covering supervision), so the rest of us could gather in the library for the staff party. It was such a thoughtful change from previous years, where the party was held after school — a time that just didn’t work for everyone, especially folks like bus drivers, coaches, and some classified staff.
To make the spread as sweet as possible, we set up a Google spreadsheet potluck list and invited staff to sign up to bring their favorite dessert — cookies, brownies, cakes, candies, pie, … you name it, it was there. No pressure, no judging — just sugary goodness and a shared celebration.

Celebrating Everyone
One thing I loved about this year’s celebration? We didn’t highlight just the retirees. We honored everyone leaving our school — whether they were retiring after decades of service, quitting education altogether, or moving on to a new education position elsewhere in our district or in another district.
Everyone had a moment. Everyone got to feel appreciated. Our administrators went the extra mile and made departing certificates and a presentation of kind words and recognition to each departing person.
It created such a positive, inclusive energy that felt truly aligned with the spirit of our school family.

Sweet Send-off Party Planning Takeaways
If you’re thinking of hosting your own sweet send-off (and I highly recommend it!), here are a few tips:
- Theme it out: Candy and dessert are easy to decorate and super festive.
- Let staff potluck: People love bringing their favorite treat — and there’s always more than enough. Keep in mind the end of the year is insane – so any and all quick-grab treats are a go: candy, popsicles, etc.
- Hold it during the school day if possible. It helps include everyone, especially those who can’t stay after hours, like the coaches and teachers who are also bus drivers. If not possible, then hold the party after school.
- Honor all departures: Retirements, transfers, promotions, relocations — they’re all worth celebrating.
- Reusable theme: As you probably know, the last month of the school year is insane. With this theme, we are considering reusing it every year. That will take the guess work out of coming up with a clever theme and reinventing the wheel each year – because ain’t nobody got time for that during Maycember! But we can tweak things and change things up a bit and still keep this adorable theme! We haven’t completely decided if we will reuse the theme yet, but I am certainly in favor. At least, we could keep it in a rotation of 2-3 themes so we can come back to it every few years.

It was a joy to see our library full of laughter, hugs, and coworkers grabbing “just one more cookie.” This simple celebration brought so much warmth to the end of our year.
We’ll sure miss our teacher friend, Mrs. T as she heads into her well-deserved teacher retirement!
