Making Thick Batter for Waffles with Blueberries
This blueberry Belgian waffles recipe is based off of a standard waffle mix I begin with and then develop into other flavors. That is how all the waffle recipes on this blog have come to exist.
This homemade batter for waffles with berries will be thick which is what you must have for proper waffles. When you use a waffle batter that is too thin, you risk having torn waffles in your waffle maker. Stick with thick batter.
We use our electric mixer for the batter. Since it is so thick, it is a beast to hand stir.
I enjoy the Belgian style waffles in the square shape from our Cuisinart Belgian Waffle Maker that we’ve had for years. Waffle grippers or tongs are also handy for removal of the waffles.
I forgot to take a picture with my blueberry batter, but here is a picture I have of the waffle maker in action with a different batter.
Toppings for Blueberry Waffles
You have lots of options when it comes to topping these blueberry waffles.
- Buy a pre-made blueberry sauce at the store
- Top with fresh blueberries and whipped cream (homemade whipped cream or Cool Whip)
- Dust with powdered sugar and fresh blueberries
- Top with traditional butter and pancake syrup
- Make a homemade blueberry sauce to add
Freeze Extra Blueberry Waffles
These thick and fluffy blueberry waffles freeze very well. I simply stack cooled waffles onto a paper plate and slide into a large gallon freezer bag. I keep them up to three months – though they don’t usually last that long! You can also put them into an air-tight plastic freezer container.
To reheat, I just pop frozen waffles into the microwave and heat for a around a minute and ten seconds. Sometimes, they may need another 10 seconds or so (depending on your microwave), but it’s best to not do too much or they can become really tough. You can also pop them into your toaster!
Homemade Blueberry Waffles
Equipment
- waffle maker
Ingredients
Blueberry Waffles
- 6 cups All purpose flour
- ½ cup Granulated sugar
- ¼ cup Baking powder
- 1 tsp Baking soda
- 1½ tsp Salt
- 3½ cups Milk
- 1 cup Vegetable oil plus two tablespoons
- 4 Eggs lightly beaten
- 2 cups Blueberries
Instructions
To Make Blueberry Waffles
- In mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients.
- Add all wet ingredients to bowl.
- Mix until smooth and well-blended.
- Add blueberries and mix again for 20-30 seconds.
- Preheat waffle maker.
- Once the waffle maker is adequately heated, add batter to the center of the lower grid. (You can use a measuring cup to do this, filling a bit at the time until the grid is filled evenly. Do not overfill the grids as batter may run over the edges. If you start with center first and spread batter outward with a spatula, you will reduce the chance of the batter running over the sides as waffles cook.)
- As you remove each group of cooked waffles from the machine, you may place them on a baking pan in a 300 degree oven while the rest of the waffles cook. This will keep them warm.
- Garnish with powdered sugar, syrup, and butter. You may also use pre-made blueberry sauce.
