Have you ever set up a walking taco bar? If not, you have landed in the right spot. I’ve collaborated with some of my favorite bloggers to bring you 9 walking taco bar ideas with recipes! Included are some taco in a bag recipes, walking tacos without the bag recipes (walking taco casseroles), and even some walking desserts!
What is a Walking Taco?
A walking taco is a basically a taco salad created right inside an individual bag of Doritos or Fritos, typically. Therefore, it is basically like a broken apart taco in a bag.
What Type of Party Would Be Fitting for These Walking Taco Bar Ideas?
I’ve often seen walking tacos served out of food trucks or at booths at craft fairs. However, it is a super easy party idea for a casual gathering at home, as well. Any time you would have a gathering of people over for a non formal occasion would likely be an okay time for a walking taco bar – especially if your guests will spend much of their time outside. It is a no-fuss, easy clean up type of meal.
How to Set Up a Walking Taco Bar
If you’ve ever set up a taco bar, you are already a pro at setting up a walking taco bar. The only thing you will do differently is set up individual bags of chips rather than taco shells or tortillas.
Step One: Prepare Taco Meat
You will prepare taco meat as you would for tacos – to your preference and as much as you will need for the number of guests.
Step Two: Set Out Bowls of Toppings
In separate serving bowls, set out bowls of each topping you choose to offer.
Ideas for Toppings
Toppings can range to all kinds of vegetables, cheeses, and salsas.
- Shredded cheese (Fiesta blend, Cheddar, or Colby Jack)
- Melted queso
- Pinto beans
- Black beans
- Cilantro
- Black olives
- Fresh tomatoes (diced)
- Pico de gallo
- White onion (diced)
- Shredded lettuce
- Salsa
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
Step Three: Prepare Walking Taco Chips Bags
I have purchased walking tacos in different sizes. Sometimes, they come in the smaller snack size of Doritos bags. Other times, they come in the larger individual bags of Doritos. Obviously, I prefer the second size. Wouldn’t you?
You will need to use scissors and cut open each bag of Doritos just before eating time. Sometimes people cut the tops. Other times, people cut one long side of the bag. This is the style I prefer as it allows for more maneuvering within the bag with a spoon and fork to add toppings, stir everything around, and eat.
Step Four: Allow Guests to Serve Themselves Buffet Style
Occasionally, you may have a need to layer up each walking taco bag yourself. An example would be if you were helping at a school event fundraiser where the volunteers prepare the food. However, if this is a party at your home, the easiest thing would be to allow each guest to prepare his own walking taco just as he would if it were a taco bar. That way each person gets the toppings he chooses.
Different Walking Taco Chips
As you may have noticed, walking taco chips differ. Sometimes, people serve walking tacos in a Nacho Cheese Doritos bag (my favorite). Other times, people serve walking tacos in a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. In a walking taco recipe below, you will see one blogger serves her walking tacos in a bag of Sun Chips.
Of course, some people prefer Fritos walking tacos. I LOVE Fritos. I mean I can easily eat a bag of plain Fritos with no control. However, I do feel like a Fritos walking taco is very similar to a Frito chili pie. I think this is why you see more people serving their walking tacos in a bag of Doritos. Whatever walking taco chips you go with, the end product is bound to be delicious!
Walking Desserts
Let’s not forget the dessert! We even have some fun walking desserts to offer up! You will enjoy walking banana pudding and walking Oreo dirt pudding!
