Well, come on in! Today, I’m bringing you in for a black and white Christmas tour of our living room and dining room. Of course, any black and white Christmas theme of mine must be highlighted with pops of color! Also, I will show how I hang Christmas stockings on my own DIY wooden stocking holder stand.
It’s been a few years since I’ve given a Christmas tour on the blog. However, I did post several Christmas topics recently – including best Christmas plants for gifts and plants on the Christmas table.
Every year, I say I’m going to take a more minimalist approach to our holiday decor. And each year, that does not happen. This year’s Christmas tour features black and white Christmas decor with punches of red, and…more plants!
Hanging Stockings Without a Mantle
Let’s start with my Christmas stocking stand. I think this is one of my favorite decorated areas of our house right now!
A few years ago, the Hubs built me this turquoise wooden blanket ladder. It was so impressive how he ran to Lowe’s without any real kind of plan, came home with $20 of decking railing material, and built and painted a DIY blanket ladder in a few hours. We painted it turquoise because this girl can never have too many pops of turquoise.
For the last several Christmas seasons, I have hung Christmas stockings on this wooden blanket ladder. I should clarify that we do have a mantle. I have hung stockings on our mantle before, and I like them there. However, depending on which garland(s) I put on my mantle, the stockings don’t always hang as flat as they should. Also, I have yet to find any Christmas stocking holders for mantle that I am crazy about. I’ve tried wooden stocking holders, metal stocking holders, you name it.
The blanket ladder makes for a perfect stocking holder – especially if you are hanging stockings without a mantle.
The Hubs puts in four nails – two on the top rung and two more on the third rung. Of course, we have to be careful not to snag our blankets with the nails. But usually the blankets hanging on the blanket ladder are more for decorative purposes anyway. After Christmas, we remove the nails.
Black and White Christmas Stockings
This year, I found these adorable black-and-white Christmas stockings with gold piping at Kirkland’s. They had gold metal initials dangling from the top. Unfortunately, they did not have all four initials that we needed so I passed them up the first time I saw them. However, like most good love stories go – I couldn’t stop thinking about those beautiful black and white buffalo checks.
I went back to get them – grabbing four with random initials. When I got home, I removed the four initials. I got out my hammered metal initials from last year’s stockings, spray painted them gold, and hung them on the stockings. They look pretty darn cute, if you ask me! I absolutely love graphic touches of Christmas in black and white!
I’m giddy with how festive this little stocking holder in the alcove off of our living room! This is a perfect spot to display our hand-painted “Oh Holy Night” sign. A few bright (cool) white LED lights from Lowe’s was the finishing touch!
Black and White Christmas Decor in the Living Room
Let’s move on to the Christmas tour of the living room. I guess this tiered tray is technically part of the kitchen, but it is well seen in the living room.
These Oreo candy canes don’t really sound tempting to me, but they certainly offer another glimpse of Christmas in black and white.
This Oh, What Fun garland is from Pottery Barn Kids. I just knew it was the perfect pop of red to complement our casual black and white Christmas decor. I decided to keep the mantle simple this year – leaving up our family photos and simply adding a few black-and-white striped baskets of little live spruce trees and a tiny succulent.
The black and white Christmas tree skirt adds another graphic punch to the room.
Black and White Christmas Table in Dining Room
The dining room table is dressed with a gold velveteen runner and punches of red with more black-and-white plant baskets as the main attraction. I found the live Christmas trees and the small succulents in stockings at Lowe’s. They bring the perfect festive holiday touch to this dining table. The striped baskets match the ones on the mantle in the living room and carry the black and white Christmas theme into this room. They are from Hobby Lobby, and I look forward to using them year-round.
This year, we added a pencil tree to the dining room. I love the festive glow it brings to the room.
