Spinach Dip on Rye Bread Appetizer
I grew up eating little party rye bread appetizers at parties when I was growing up. My mom made them often when we took something for potluck.
Basically, the end result is a tray of little baked toasts (rye, sourdough, pumpernickel) topped with a tasty goodness of melted cheese and other toppings.
Where to Buy Rye Party Bread?
Seasonally, Edward’s Grocery Store carries the small rye party bread in its bakery and deli section. Kroger also carries them often. Sometimes, I find them in various times around the year. I often buy a few extra packages to stock in my freezer.
This year, I panicked a bit because I went to Edward’s and didn’t see the cocktail breads in the deli/baker y area. But I asked the lady working the deli counter and she said she had them back in her deli freezer still. Whew! My Christmas party food plans almost went out the window!
Where to Find Pre-Made Spinach Dip for Spinach Toast Appetizers?
We often buy our spinach dip at Walmart. The Marketside brand is sold in the deli department. We keep it in our fridge to dip with chips and veggie sticks for quick lunches or snacks. The spinach dip from this brand has a bit of crunch thanks to chopped water chestnuts and a bit of color thanks to blended carrots and tomatoes in the recipe. It is delicious and pretty!
But you can make your own homemade spinach dip or buy any spinach dip from your favorite store.
The main thing is to use a spinach dip that is thick. If the dip is too runny, the dip will run off the breads when it heats in the oven. The Marketside dip that I use is nice and thick and pretty much has to be forced off the spoon as you can see in the photo below.
Assembling Spinach Dip Rye Bread Appetizers
Assembling spinach dip rye bread appetizers is really easy. Simply, I set the cocktail rye bread on a baking sheet. Typically, I can fit up to about 20 breads onto one baking sheet. Using a spoon, I scoop about a tablespoon’s worth of dip onto each rye bread.
Next, I sprinkle just a bit of shredded Colby Jack cheese on each bread. Of course, you could easily use any shredded cheese you have on hand. The addition of the cheese is to primarily add another look pop of color and texture on top. What appetizer doesn’t look pretty with an addition of melted cheese.
Finally, I bake the party rye bread in the oven at 400 degrees for about 7-8 minutes. You want the edges of the bread to get crispy like toast, but you don’t want the dip to get to the point of looking dry.
How to Serve Rye Party Bread Appetizers?
Rye party bread appetizers are fabulous at any potluck style gathering or party. They make perfect football party food.
We often take them as Christmas party appetizers, and I also take them for ladies night out gatherings at someone’s house throughout the year. They are best served warm so you definitely need to make sure you have a way to heat them.
When possible, I assemble my spinach dip toast appetizers at the party to ensure they will be hot when served. I bring the cocktail rye bread already laid out on a baking pan and covered with foil. Also, I bring the dip and the cheese. It only takes a minute or two to scoop the dip onto the breads and dust them with cheese before popping the pan into the oven for a few minutes.
Set them out on a pretty serving tray, and enjoy your soiree!
