As you may have seen in some of my other posts like my peanut butter pizza post, I enjoy taking my favorite restaurant recipes and recreating them at home. This bacon cheddar pizza with ham recipe is one that can easily be created at home with standard kitchen ingredients.
For the photos in this recipe post, I used a rectangular store-bought Pillsbury pizza crust. However, if you have yeast at home, you can easily make your own homemade pizza dough. I like to make a few up ever so often and keep them in the freezer.
This bacon, ham and cheese pizza recipe is great for cooking with kids as there are several steps kiddos can help with. We use whatever kind of ham we have on hand – whether that be leftover baked ham or chopped deli ham. Smoked ham on pizza with cheddar cheese is a beautiful combination.
In my freezer, I toss in freezer bags of leftover grilled bacon from the George Foreman grill whenever we make bacon for breakfast. This comes in handy for so many different recipes when you just need a little bacon in a recipe. In this particular recipe, I suggest using about one-fourth cup of chopped bacon. And if you don’t have any bacon on hand, just go on without it. The ham is the real star of this ham and cheese pizza show and the bacon is a secondary character, anyway. But if you have the bacon, use it!
Optionally, for a ham and pineapple pizza, you can add one fourth cup of well-drained (very well-drained) pineapple chunks when you add the ham and bacon. My family is a big fan of the Hawaiian pizza though I prefer ham on pizza with no pineapple.
Cooking with Kids to Make Bacon Cheddar Pizza with Ham
When in the kitchen with my two daughters, I have learned to handle things two ways. Either I call them in one at a time to help with a task. Or I have them both in the kitchen at the same time while each does a completely different task. Both of these methods lead to less fighting between the two of them. This mama cannot handle a bunch of bickering and fussing while trying to pay attention to cooking steps.
In these photos, my oldest daughter is working with the pizza dough while my youngest daughter is tasked with breaking the smallish pieces of bacon into even smaller pieces.
They take turns spreading on the pizza sauce and sprinkling on the cheeses.
