What You Need for Orange Creamsicle Cake Bites
Typically, I use Duncan Hines Orange Supreme Cake Mix, but any orange-flavored cake mix would work. To the cake mix, I add orange Jello mix, eggs, and milk instead of the typical oil. The result is several dozen citrus-y spongy cake bites.
The idea for making these orange creamsicle cake bites came from trying some similar lemon cake bites at a church function several years back. I remember my pastor raving about these lemon cake bites at this large yard-sale type event our church has in the summer. I went to the kitchen area and tried one which led to two which led to three. They were incredible! Soon after, when I saw the Duncan Hines orange cake mix at the store, my mind instantly went back to those delicious cake bites I had tried at church. And so here we are!
These little bites bring to mind orange creamsicles or orange creamsicle cake, which is why I named them orange creamsicle cake bites. I’m just truly clever like that. I wouldn’t call them cake balls because cake balls typically have a frosting mixed in with the cake batter making them extra indulgent. Rather, these treats are more like an orange sponge cake – more dense but with an extra kick of sweetness from the glaze.
Because you will use mini muffin pans, this recipe makes a large number of mini cakes. My batches usually give me a little more than 2.5 pans – around 65 little treats!
I can picture taking these cake bites to any summer party, wedding shower, or baby shower. They are simple to serve since they are of the grab-and-go variety of desserts.
