This easy mango pico de gallo – or mango salsa – is so simple to prepare. You can use it as a topping over chicken, shrimp, tacos, and pork. Also, you can use it for dippers like tortilla chips or pita chips.
Years ago, I made this mango pico de gallo with chili, and one of my coworkers mentioned this mango salsa again and again over the next several years. I eventually wrote out the recipe for her on a piece of paper. I’m not sure why it took me this many years to bring it over to our website! It is a keeper!
What is Pico De Gallo?
Traditionally, pico de gallo can be found accompanying Hispanic foods. You will find many entrees at Latin American restaurants served alongside or under a scoop of colorful pico de gallo. Pico typically includes tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro, red onions or white onions, and/or other forms of peppers.
What is Mango de Gallo?
Mango de gallo is very similar to pico de gallo. The difference in our particular mango pico de gallo recipe is the substitution of mango for the typical tomatoes. Some might call this recipe mango salsa rather than mango pico de gallo. Either name you choose to call it, it works the same way! You top things with it and scoop things with it!
Mango Chili Salsa?
It is totally up to you whether you choose to add the optional chili powder to create a mango chili salsa. Just know in Mexico, the combination of mango and chili is extremely popular. The mangonada is very popular as is the street food of mango on a stick with chili powder.
Ingredients
- 2 mangoes
- ¼ of a red onion
- ½ of a red pepper
- 1 jalapeno
- Juice of two limes
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
Substitutions for this Mango Salsa
- Add cilantro! Hey, it’s your dish!
- Add 1/2 cup of diced peaches.
- Use white onion instead of red onion.
- Add 1/4 chopped bell peppers.
- Use habanero pepper instead of jalapeño.
This is a mango salsa without cilantro and tomatoes. However, this blend is very customizable. You want cilantro? Add it!
Note that in our photos, we are not adding the optional teaspoon of chili powder. But if you are adding it, you would sprinkle it in at the end!
