How to Keep a Mexican Fiesta Authentic with Party Decor
To keep a Mexican fiesta authentic, you need to stay away from cheesy store-bought cardboard cutouts of sombreros and stick-on mustaches! For the love of the world, do not spend a cent on these culturally stereotypical things!
As a cultural professional by day, I would encourage you to always stay clear of those extremely over-stereotypical elements.
Instead, hit up your local Hispanic market for some authentic Hispanic food items and your local nursery for succulent plants for the best authentic succulent decorations for a fiesta!
What Types of Fiesta Decorations to Buy at the Hispanic Market
At my favorite Hispanic market, I like to buy small cans, jars, and bottles of popular Hispanic brands of products. These authentic Hispanic cans will become the vases and flower pots at the party.
Metal Cans for Succulent Fiesta Pots
- El Pato Salsa de tomate (Tomato Sauce)
- La Costeña Frijoles de pintos (Pinto Beans)
- Goya Frijoles negros (Black Beans)
- La Sierra Frijoles charros (Charro Beans)
- La Morena Chipotle (Chipotle Peppers in Adobe Sauce)
- Goya Chiles
Why these specific brands? Because these brands are authentic Hispanic products – known and trusted widely in the Hispanic countries/communities – especially in Mexico and Mexican-American communities in the United States.
These cans are short and squatty. They are great for filling with a small succulent plant (in its original plastic post) surrounded with rock.
In combination with the metal cans for flower pots, I also used some authentic Mexican pottery I picked up at my local Hispanic market. A few of the pieces, I had bought years ago from a flea market.
Succulent Flower Vases
- Jarritos (Jarritos Sodas in Various Flavors)
- Tiky (Pineapple Soda)
- Tia Lupita Chipotle (Salsa)
- Herndez Salsa Verde (Green Salsa)
These glass bottles and jars are tall and narrow and lend themselves well to holding small bundles of flowers. Choose flowers in a color scheme of your choice. Brights work really well for a Mexican theme fiesta.
Fresh Produce for Scattering on Tables
- Mangos
- Avocados
- Plantain Bananas
- Limes
- Jalapeňos
- Coconuts
- Sweet peppers
Fresh fruit, like mangoes and fresh limes will bring vibes of Mexico to your next fiesta. Additionally, raw plantain bananas and avocados will do the same. Tuck the produce into an eclectic assortment of bowls, trays, and vignettes around the party area.
Mexican Textiles for Tablecloths and Table Dressings
- Mexican serapes (Mexican blankets)
- Woven placemats
- Embroidered textiles
Using authentic Mexican textiles is the perfect way to add polish and authenticity to your Mexican themed bridal shower, birthday party, or other affair.
You can really amp up your chosen color scheme with the textile combinations. Drape a Mexican blanket over a table in place of a plastic tablecloth for a more genuine touch. Other touches I added to our overall look included authentic maracas picked up on trips to Mexico and Mexican pottery.
What Types ofFlowers and Succulents for a Succulent Themed Party
For plants for a fiesta, I like a combination of bold color flowers and small succulents. For flowers, I grab flowers at my grocery store or local nursery. I head to my nearest Lowe’s or my favorite nursery to buy small succulents for table centerpieces.
Flowers
Gerber Daisies offer bold pops of color for a party like this. If you can’t find daisies, then find any other small vibrant flowers that you can break into small clusters. In these photos, I am using a mixed collection of flowers from my local market.
Succulents
Although I love the colorful cactus succulents, I have learned transporting cacti – even small ones – is problematic. Have you ever been poked by a cactus? It hurts! Instead, I buy non-prickley succulents – Donkey’s Tails (Burro’s Tails), Senecio, Echeveria, and Haworthia. I also throw in a few realistic faux succulents if I find I didn’t buy enough real succulents.
There are multiple sizes of succulents offered at nurseries. I try to buy the smallest ones to ensure the base will fit into the cans easily without me having to totally repot the plants.
You have to be very careful transporting everything!
Using Authentic Fiesta Decorations Allows for Reusability
The great thing about these types of authentic fiesta decorations is the reusability. You bought five cans of tomato sauce for the succulent flower pots? Great! Now, just pour the tomato sauce into Ziplock bags. Label the bags and toss them in your freezer to use in future recipes. The same goes for the beans and the salsas.
The only thing I find I have trouble saving for later are the sodas from the Jarritos and Tiki bottles. Obviously, soda goes flat. So what I do instead is buy all of the food decorations earlier – like a week before the party. That gives my family time to drink the sodas before I need to use the glass soda bottles for flower vases at the fiesta.
After the fiesta, you can either offer the succulents as fiesta party favors, or you can take them home for your garden.
Any textiles can obviously be used again and again for decorative purposes.
Add Letter Boards to Your Fiesta Party Theme Ideas
Use our fiesta quotes ideas to help you choose just the perfect fiesta letter board as part of your succulent party decor! A quirky letter board really adds a fun touch. Just don’t over do it, and try to choose some of the more authentic quotes rather than any stereotypical cliche types.
To be honest, the quote we used at this particular party is too cliche for my liking. However, the letter board was a last second thought and this is all we came up with in two seconds.
Food for Fiesta Party Theme
The most typical go-to is a taco bar for a fiesta party. Taco bars are easy and allow guests to serve themselves and customize their food. However, for an authentic fiesta party, you can think in terms of more regionalized Mexican dishes – mole, al pastor, etc.
As for the taco bar, you could add more authentically Mexican preparation styles. For example, you could serve carne asada rather than ground beef, etc.
Drinks for Fiesta Party Theme
Hands down, the easiest authentic Mexican drink for your fiesta party will be agua fresca! These drinks are simple to make, budget-friendly, and you can make a variety of flavors. You can make agua fresca family friendly with no alcohol. Or you can add alcohol for a cocktail version.

As I mentioned above, try to incorporate as many unique items as you can into your succulent fiesta party decor. But if you don’t have authentic Mexican blankets or Mexican pottery, Amazon can help you!
