One comfort food that can be made multiple ways is the good ole’ fettuccine alfredo. Likely, you’ve tried it with chicken and, perhaps, shrimp. But have you ever had fettuccine alfredo with ham? Ham pasta is a nice twist on the standard chicken or beef pastas.
The recipe I am using is one I have adapted from a local cookbook – The Junior League of Little Rock cookbook. As a member of the Little Rock Junior League, I was around when this cookbook was created. And though I was not on the actual committee of ladies who created this cookbook, I know many of them. I am so proud of their efforts with this project. It really is a fabulous cookbook! In the cookbook, the recipe is spelled as “fettucini alfredo with ham.” On the great internet, I see fettuccine spelled both ways. I think the official Italian spelling is fettuccine with an accent.
My Hubs is not as much of a fan of alfredo fettuccine as I am. He often finds the alfredo fettuccine recipes a bit bland. Luckily, you can kick up alfredo a notch by adding your favorite seasoning into the alfredo sauce as you put it together on the stove. I am adding my spice adaptation to this recipe, but feel free to omit the extra spice if you prefer a classic low-spice alfredo fettuccine recipe.
What Kind of Ham Do I use in Ham Pasta?
It is the perfect way to use up leftover ham. Likewise, it is super simple to make using deli ham. For the version I photographed for this blog post, I used deli ham – Petit Jean deli ham, an Arkansas-made ham. Just know this is a recipe to keep in your pocket if you are thinking of what to do with leftover ham following those ham-overdosed holidays!
Making Fettuccine Alfredo with Vegetables
Aside from dicing the tomatoes, slicing the ham into strips, and slicing the zucchini, there is not a lot of prep involved. This recipe calls for using a vegetable peeler to make long strips with the zucchini. I have never prepared zucchini in this method until I found this recipe. The long strips of ham and zucchini pair well with the long narrow fettucini noodles.
Is there anything better than fettuccine alfredo with vegetables? Yum.
