If you are looking for an easy rum cocktail for a pitcher, you have found it! This simple Dr Pepper and rum cocktail, also known as Prohibition Punch, relies on just a few ingredients! There are no fancy ingredients necessary for this 1920s era cocktail. I made this at a recent party for a Roaring 20s cocktail, but it works for any occasion.
Serving a Rum and Dr Pepper Cocktail for a 1920s Party
This white rum and Dr Pepper cocktail came to fruition in my kitchen recently when I was brainstorming 1920s party food and drinks to serve at my Roaring 1920s murder mystery party. I called it our “house special: Prohibition Punch.” The beauty was that I was able to make it ahead of time and pop it in the fridge.
Surprisingly, Dr Pepper was popular in the 1920s – coming to popularity some years earlier and marketed with a bit of a health twist. Dr Pepper really hit prime exposure in 1904 at the World’s Fair Exposition in St. Louis.
Likewise, white rum gained popularity in the United States during the Prohibition thanks to smugglers and rum runners who eagerly distributed rum from Cuba, the Bahamas, and other regions.
Therefore, a Prohibition punch made of Dr Pepper and white rum is in order for any 1920s affair. Right, dolls and gents?
Pitcher Size Matters
This recipe is easy peasy…two parts Dr Pepper to 1 part white rum. Let that ratio be your guideline more so than ounces as different pitchers come in different sizes. In the U.S., most pitchers seem to range between 32 ounces to 60 ounces. So the size of your serving pitcher definitely matters when trying to figure out how much of each liquid to pour.
How to Serve Dr Pepper and Rum Cocktail
This drink is no fuss at all. Just set a pitcher out with some cocktail glasses, and let your guests serve themselves! The fussiest part is slicing the oranges! That’s as hard as it gets!
For garnish, you can either add fresh orange slices straight into the pitcher. If you have any cocktail picks, you can slide a few cherries on there with an orange wedge.
