Friends! I’m so excited to FINALLY bring this post to the site. I pilfered through 16,000 plant photos on my phone – yes, I said 16,000! – to find my favorite house plant vignette photos from over the years. Today, I am sharing my 5 favorite common house plants – as you will find in my home on any given day! Read on for names and photos of common house plants that you may want to add to your own home.
Main 10 Common House Plants
Mainly, we stick with about 10 varieties of common house plants in our home. Over the years, I have rotated through many variations of plants. The plants that have proven their Amy-survival power are still here (with some duplicates brought in). The ones that didn’t have Amy-survival power have gone on to plant Heaven by now.

Monstera
Monsteras need a lot of sunlight in order for their leaves to split. Baby leaves don’t automatically come with splits. The leaves split as they mature – but they need a good amount of indirect sunlight to encourage the splits (fenestrations).
We keep our monstera in our front dining room which has both south-facing windows and west-facing windows. She gets a lot of attention in her simple basket because she is the true queen of the room!
Golden Pothos
Our golden pothos have been mostly happy anywhere we have put them. They get a bit dramatic when they are thirsty, but other than that, they are good plants for us in most rooms.
I like to style our Golden Pothos in a very simple fashion – in pots that go from plain to glam. These plants are not true show-stoppers for me. I use them more as greenery filler around the home. Don’t get me wrong – I love them! It’s just they don’t have the wow factor that some of my other favorite house plants do. But they have qualities of their own right – they are dependable, unfussy, and give you clear signs of their needs. Yellow leaves? They are ready to be groomed and plucked. Wilting leaves? They are thirsty.
It’s just that I don’t like to put my showstoppers in my more eye-catching pots because certain plants are already attention-grabbing on their own right. The Golden Pothos is more of a wall-flower, in my opinion, so bring on all the eye-catching pots! Here, my long-lasting Golden Pothos shines in a blue macrame floor basket.
Ponytail Palms
Oh, how I love my Ponytail Palm house plants! I have so many now! It’s hard to even choose a photo of Ponytail Palms for this post because I have a gazillion Ponytail Palm photos!
Silver Leaf Philodendron
There are so many types of philodendrons. I love many of the varieties, However, none quite strike my heart like the silver leaf philodendron!
This plant carries dark olive green leaves with a silver pattern of markings. It is a stunner! I can’t help but reach over and feel the velvety leaves with my fingers when you see a healthy silver leaf philodendron!
Snake Plants
Talk about plants that have stood the test of time! Also called Mother in Law’s Tongue, snake plants are probably the most versatile plant for blending in or bringing the drama. It all depends on the styling. I have snake plants sprinkled all over my home and all over my classroom.
Many times, I like to style my snake plants in groups – often choosing three different variations to group together. Other times, like below, I like to put one queen all on her own for a statement display. A beautiful basket never hurts when you are attempting for the snake plant to get all the eyes.
