These You’ve Been Piñata’d printables for Cinco de Mayo gift baskets is one of the things we look forward to with the upcoming holiday! And we’ve got free printables and a list of Cinco de Mayo gift basket ideas for you to put together a small gift with ease! Our printables include instructions for playing a gift-passing game – You’ve Been Piñata’d – which is like the You’ve Been Boo’d game. But you can just use the tags for regular Cinco de Mayo gifts if you don’t want to start a game.

Even though Cinco de Mayo is more of an Americanized holiday and not an authentic one, it shouldn’t mean we can’t have some fun with it! It is true that many people of Mexican descent do not celebrate or even acknowledge Cinco de Mayo. (I am an English a Second Language teacher in a public junior high school, and the majority of my students from Mexico do not know what Cinco de Mayo is when they first arrive to the United States.) But we Americans like to have and celebrate all the things, yes?
And we do think this game would be fun for Spanish teachers to play with their students or staff members in their school. (Just be sure to remove the Drinko de Mayo tag that references tequila!)
How to Play You’ve Been Piñata’d Gift Game
We modeled this game after some other similar gift games here on this site or over on our sister site.
The You’ve Been Piñata’d gift basket game is simple: you choose a recipient, put together a small gift bag or box of drinks, snacks, games, and other goodies, and leave it on his/her doorstep anonymously. Along with the items, you include a note explaining the game. (This is where our cute printable You’ve Been Piñata’d gift basket printables below come in handy!)
It is up to the recipient to decide if he/she wants to pay it forward. And if so, they can reuse the printables – or you can print a second copy of printables for them to pass on to their recipient – to help the game continue on.

These gifts do not need to be large. In fact, they probably should not be large. Just a small little surprise is all that is needed!
The instructions on our note say to fill a small piñata, but we often just use little plastic bright baskets or bins from Dollar Tree or Dollar General. Also, you can simply bundle some things together and tie them together. No bin necessary.
What to Put In a Cinco de Mayo Basket for Families with Kids
If you are gifting this Cinco de Mayo treat basket to a child or a family with children, you will want to include some kid-friendly items. Add some kid-friendly snacks: Mexican candies, packets of Mexican hot cocoa, Jarritos sodas, etc. If you are in a baking mood, you can also add some homemade Mexican-inspired treats like our cinnamon churro bars.
See our gift ideas list included in the printables for a ton of ideas of what to add to your basket!
What to Put in a You’ve Been Piñata’d Gift Box for Adults
For adults, you can focus on the same things that we suggested for the kids – Mexican candy, Mexican cocoa or coffee packets, and Jarritos. But you can also add some adult-themed items such as small bottles of quality tequila or margarita mixers. Garden seed packets of hot peppers or bottled hot pepper sauce is another fun idea! Fiesta cocktail napkins and straws are fun, too!
We like to put in anything bright and colorful!
No joke…last year, after summer was over, I found an entire clearance section at my local Dollar General full of fiesta decor. I thought some of the larger items – like the Ray Dunn serving platters that say “Fiesta” – would go for about $1 per item. When I got to the register, it all rang up for 25 cents each item! Just look at this haul of fiesta stuff! I bought as much as I could to use in some of my Cinco de Mayo gift baskets for this year.

Don’t forget to print your free You’ve Been Piñata’d printables for Cinco de Mayo gift baskets below. I’m attaching them in color or in a low-scale gray and white which can be printed in grayscale or in black-and-white (for those without the option to print in color). Our color printer is ALWAYS running out of color ink – despite us refilling the cartridges. Therefore, I just printed my PDFs in grayscale.

Again, you don’t have to play the gift game if you don’t want to. You could just print the tags to use for small Cinco de Mayo gifts to pass out to neighbors and friends instead. They would also make great tags for Cinco de Mayo party favors at your fiesta!
