If you grew up eating goulash, like me, this recipe is for you! Growing up, my mom made this cheesy beef goulash on the regular. Some time ago, I tweaked her original recipe to make it into a one pot beef and macaroni skillet recipe. It is basically a homemade Hamburger Helper beef pasta recipe. The best way I can describe this one pot beef and macaroni skillet recipe is as a copycat Hamburger Helper beef with macaroni recipe.
How to Prepare One Pot Beef and Macaroni Skillet on the Stove Top
This cheesy beef goulash comes together so quickly on the stove top. I like to make this as a one pot beef and macaroni by starting with precooked and thawed ground beef. I add uncooked macaroni to the beef along with a spicy broth.
Sometimes, if I don’t have a package of pre-cooked ground beef on hand, I simply whip up some raw ground beef and then drain it. It doesn’t add much extra time to this recipe – maybe 10 minutes.
Once the pasta has cooked and softened and most of the liquid has cooked down, I stir in some shredded cheese.

Cheesy Beef Goulash
Equipment
- 1 medium skillet
Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground beef
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 15 oz Diced Tomatoes undrained
- 24 oz Tomato broth Or Chicken Broth or Water (3 cups)
- 16 oz Elbow macaroni
- 1 cup Milk
- 2 cups Cheddar cheese shredded
Instructions
To Prepare the Macaroni and Beef Skillet
- If using raw ground beef, brown ground beef with garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a medium skillet with high sides. (If using pre-cooked ground beef, heat thawed meat in skillet with the seasonings.)
- Drain meat and return to pan.
- In same skillet, add undrained tomatoes and broth (or water) and bring to boil.
- Add elbow macaroni.
- Cook uncovered over medium heat for 12-15 minutes or until noodles are softened. (It is possible, you will need to add a bit more broth or water as the mixture cooks down.)
- Stir in the milk and cheese. (Reserve a bit of cheddar cheese to use as garnish later.)
- Heat through and serve with a bit of shredded cheese for garnish.
Notes
- Make this recipe even faster by using ground beef that has been pre-cooked.
- For another shortcut, add 3 cups of water along with 3 tablespoons of tomato (or chicken) broth granules straight into the pan with the meat rather than preparing the broth separately. Stir and bring to a boil.
