Using Slap Ya Mama Seasoning for Cajun Butter Shrimp
If you have a container of Slap Ya Mama on hand, you are all set! This Cajun seasoning is something I was introduced to when I lived for a year in south Louisiana. It brings the heat! In my recipe card below, I suggest using one tablespoon and then adding to that as you prefer.
The first time I made this recipe, I overshot and added two and a half tablespoons to 30 shrimp. Wowsers! Our mouths were on fire!
I have tweaked the recipe over time to using only one tablespoon per 20 or so large shrimp (or 30 medium shrimp). In the notes section of my recipe card below, I have added this suggestion for Slap Ya Mama shrimp.
Using a Combination of Pantry Spices for Cajun Butter Shrimp
If you prefer to make your own cajun spice blend, you can easily to that by combining the following ingredients:
- Garlic powder
- Cayenne pepper
- Black pepper
- Salt
Another recipe perfecting blooper of mine was to use too much cayenne pepper the first time I put together this recipe. I tweaked down and then down again by the third time to where I had it like I like it – pretty spicy but not unbearable.
Other Cajun Seasoning Substitutes
There are a lot of Cajun seasonings out there. In the event you do not have my list of basic pantry seasonings or you do not have Original Slap Ya Mama seasoning, you should easily be able to use any of the other cajun seasoning substitutes below.
- Slap Ya Mama Variations (Hot or White Pepper Blend – be sure to start with lower amounts and add to it for tastes so as not to overdo it)
- Tony Chachere’s (This is my other favorite brand! You might also like this Tony Chachere variety pack)
- McCormick’s Perfect Pinch – Cajun (Can’t go wrong with McCormick’s!)
- Phil Robertson’s Duck Commander Cajun Seasoning (Could I really be from the Arkansas/Louisiana border if I didn’t show support to my Duck Dynasty guys?!)
- Ragin’ Cajun (A popular cajun seasoning here in the south!)
- Louisiana Cajun Seasoning – (This seasoning is brought by a longtime trusted brand.)
Of course, there are plenty of other Cajun spices out there. Just choose your favorite, matching up to the ratios below, and you should have a tasty cajun butter shrimp!
