Birthday cake waffles might be the answer you are looking for if you are trying to decide how to celebrate a birthday at home. For my daughters’ birthdays this past year, I modified an old favorite basic waffle recipe to turn it into a funfetti waffles recipe. These birthday waffles fall along nicely with birthday breakfast ideas for kids and grown ups, too!
What little kid doesn’t light up at the sight of sprinkles? Doing a little math, it’s easy to see how adding sprinkles to vanilla-based waffles base gives us birthday cake waffles! I have seen birthday waffles prepared in various ways. Some people make cake batter waffles using funfetti cake mix. Other people make regular waffles and garnish with loads of whipped cream and sprinkles. There is more than one way to things, friends!
As for me, the basic waffles recipe I’ve used for years can’t get much easier and uses pantry and fridge staples. With a few additions, it gives yummy birthday waffles. If you are planning a waffle party, other breakfast party ideas, or just planning birthday breakfast ideas for kids, this homemade funfetti waffles recipe might just be for you!
Birthday Cake Waffles
Ingredients
- 6 cups All-purpose flour
- ¼ cup Granulated sugar, plus 2 tablespoons
- ¼ cup Baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons Salt
- 3 ½ cups Milk, reduced fat
- 1 cup Vegetable oil, plus 2 tablespoons
- 4 Eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon Vanilla
- 1 cup Sprinkles, divided
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients (except for sprinkles) in the order listed into a large mixing bowl.
- Whisk until smooth, adding 3/4 cup sprinkles at the very end of mixing.
- Let batter rest for 5 minutes.
- Preheat your waffle maker.
- Once waffle maker is preheated, add about about 1 and 3/4 cup batter to the center of the waffle maker for a four-waffle maker. (If your waffle maker makes one waffle at a time, add a little less than half a cup to the middle of your grid.)
- Spread the batter as evenly as possible, covering all squares of the grids with a silicon or heat-proof spatula.
- Close lid and heat until waffle maker finishes the cooking cycle.
- Carefully remove hot waffles, careful not to rip them.
- Repeat the cooking process with remaining batter. (You may keep the cooked waffles on a metal pan in warm oven while the rest cook.)
- Garnish with syrup, whipped cream, and the remaining 1/4 cup of sprinkles. Add birthday candles, if desired.

The recipes make 16 hearty waffles. My girls usually can only eat one. Sometimes, my husband can eat two. But they are pretty thick and filling waffles.
