You dip. I dip. We dip. Just don’t double that dip and we’re all good, right? This 2-ingredient BBQ dip for potato chips will make you want to double dip, alright.
Why Make BBQ Sour Cream Dip for a Potato Chip Dip?
With football season underway, aren’t we all looking for quick party food? This barbecue dip couldn’t be any easier but still gives an “I made an effort” vibe to your chip and dip table. As much as my heart is tied to cheese dip, I do still enjoy a good sour cream dip, too! And the best thing about a sour cream dip recipe for potato chips? Nine times out of ten, it is an easy sour cream dip recipe! After all, cold dip recipes require no heating which makes it a simple appetizer recipe for any party hostess. Cold dips make for some of the easiest potluck items, as well. No worrying about how you are going to heat up your appetizer once you arrive at your destination.
Obviously, potato chips and barbecue flavors go together. Hello, barbecue chips!
However, the creaminess of this 2-ingredient sour cream dip is a real compliment to plain potato chips. I like to use Wavy Lay’s Potato Chips or Ruffles Ridges Potato Chips with this BBQ dip.
Of course, sour cream dips are for tortilla chips, too. With tortilla chips, I prefer the smaller round tortilla chips for better chip-dip ratio.
Will BBQ Dip Double as an Easy Vegetable Dip Recipe?
Also, this BBQ sour cream dip also makes an easy vegetable dip recipe. Serve this potato chip dip recipe with carrots, broccoli, or zucchini slices for a healthier veggie tray option instead of chips and dip.
What Kind of BBQ Sauce Should I Use?
No doubt, there are tons of different barbecue sauce brands and flavors. The only barbecue sauce I have used for this barbecue dip is Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet and Spicy. I like the slightly sweet kick paired with a salty chip. However, that isn’t to say this dip wouldn’t be tasty with another brand or flavor of barbecue sauce. One of our family members made my original version as written in the recipe card below. She also made a second version with her husband’s favorite barbecue sauce – Sweet Baby Ray’s Hickory and Brown Sugar. They enjoyed both versions! I look forward to trying out other barbecue-sour cream dip combinations in the future.
In my recipe, I call for 6 tablespoons of barbecue sauce per 16 ounces of sour cream for a mild barbecue flavor. It might be that you want a stronger barbecue flavor. If so, add one extra tablespoon at a time until the flavor is as you prefer. If you think the dip might be a bit sweet for your liking, then you might choose to do the opposite – go lighter on the barbecue sauce and heavier on the sour cream base. Read the next section for one more idea for cutting back on the sweetness of this bbq dip.
Is this Really a 2-Ingredient Sour Cream Dip?
Yes. You can totally make this recipe with sour cream and barbecue sauce alone. Although not necessary, an optional third ingredient for this sour cream dip would be a bit of cayenne pepper to cut back the sweetness of the dip. I like to mix in about 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper into the sour cream and barbecue sauce. Then, I dust just a bit across the top for aesthetic purposes. The cayenne pepper is absolutely not required for a tasty dip. Definitely, I have made this dip with only sour cream and barbecue sauce. But many of us have cayenne pepper on hand anyway, so I figure why not? It adds a bit of speckled color to this blush pink colored dip and adds another slight dimension of flavor.
When Should I Serve BBQ Dip?
BBQ dip makes great football party food. Think about how much people enjoy snacking on barbecue chips for football food AND how much they enjoy dipping things. It just makes sense they would enjoy this BBQ dip. Of course, this dip is also perfect for a neighborhood barbecue or family cook-out. Basically, this creamy dip can be served at any potluck style gathering. Likewise, it can be served as simple game day snacks for just you or your family. No party necessary.
