Disclosure: I was invited to Moss Mountain Farm for the #farm2home2016 event to learn more about the local farmers and the local food market in Arkansas. My invitation included a full day of activities including a tour of the P. Allen Smith home and gardens and lunch on the farm. All thoughts and opinions included here are my own.
Last week, I attended the Farm 2 Home 2016 at Moss Mountain Farm in Roland, Arkansas. Moss Mountain Farm is the Arkansas home and property of P. Allen Smith. Hopefully, you read last week’s post about what I learned at this year’s Farm 2 Home Event and why we all need to support our local farmers and makers.
This week, I am highlighting my favorite photos taken from the tour of the P. Allen Smith home and gardens.
In my opinion, the incredible thing about the P. Allen Smith House is the way that it was designed to look old, yet it is only ten-years-old and is actually quite modernized and green. The Greek Revival style house was built on the 650 acres of land after P. Allen fell in love with the 300-year-old Oak tree which stands grandly in front of the home. The house is red brick but has a lime wash with a chalky finish to help create the aged look.
The Interiors of the P. Allen Smith Home
The home has three levels including a finished attic which is dedicated as a play area for Smith’s nieces and nephews. There are seven fireplaces which include Rumford Fireboxes.
The decor and design for the house come from his vision of blending exteriors and interiors with an earthy transition. A spokesperson for the Smith camp explained that the home does not have crown molding since crown molding “came into vogue after the Greek Revival period.”
It is ridiculous how many pictures I took. Then, I had trouble narrowing them down for this post. Therefore, I am highlighting my favorite spaces of the house: landing areas, kitchen, front living area, porches, and play room.
The First Floor
Well, let’s start with my favorite room of any home – the kitchen.
This kitchen, y’all. I could eat here and cook here every day for the rest of my life. Heck, I would even cook for you all every day for the rest of my life.
Smith’s love of books and art cannot be overlooked in the home. No doubt, I could linger all day looking at the art pieces and the book titles! Some of the art are pieces painted by P. Allen Smith himself and others are from various artist. The piece that hangs in the back parlor over the fireplace was painted by Gilbert Stewart, who also painted a portrait of George Washington. The person featured in this particular portrait is unknown, which adds a bit of interest and intrigue to the piece, in my opinion.
“Unknown man by famous artist,” is how Smith’s spokesperson put it.
Allen’s effort to bring the outdoors in did not go unnoticed with all of the green apples and fresh cut flowers throughout the home.
The Second Floor
The upstairs landing is perfection.
Screened porches run the length of the first and second floors. Once you step onto the first floor porch, you don’t care about making any other appointments for the rest of the day. You just want to sit.
The Sleeping Porch
Until you get to the upstairs sleeping porch. Then, you just want to lie down.
Seriously, I don’t think there was a person on the tour who didn’t want to collapse onto one of these beds in the gorgeous sleeping porch. Even though it was around 90 degrees and extremely humid, a perfect afternoon breeze drifted through the porch.
The Third Floor – Kids’ Zone
Finally, the third-floor play area includes a living area space, a bathroom, and a sleeping area with four twin beds for Smith’s nieces and nephews. The space makes a complete circle. It is the neatest kid space with a powerful color scheme and whimsical design!
How adorable is this rug, continuing the pink and green theme, on the stairs between the playroom and the second floor?
The Exteriors and Gardens of the P. Allen Smith Home
Again, I took so many pictures that I cannot possibly share them all, but I am just going to give you a few more of my favorites of the property.
Truly, the front porch is a southern lady’s dream come true!
How precious is Smith’s art studio?
No doubt, this P. Allen Smith home is something to see in person! My pictures don’t even cover 25% of the house and outdoor spaces and certainly don’t give the property its true justice. To book your own lunch tour (Thursdays and Fridays), visit the link at the top of this post.
Thanks to P. Allen and his team for inviting me out for the #farm2home event!
